We know you love to help out and lend a hand with nonprofits near you, but we bet you didn’t know that these historical figures were big volunteers too! Ben Franklin – He created bifocals and was one of America’s Founding Fathers, but did you know he also created the very first volunteer fire department? You’ve likely heard Franklin’s famous quote, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. ” Franklin brought together a group of 30 men in 1736 to form the Union Fire Company to prevent massive fires in Philadelphia. Christopher Reeve – After an accident left him paralyzed, the late actor became an advocate for those suffering from spinal cord injuries. Reeve acted as Chairman of the American Paralysis Association and was Vice Chairman of the National Organization on Disability. He also co- founded the Reeve- Irvine Research Center and created the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The Foundation funds research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries and works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through grants, advocacy, and a paralysis resource center. Khamatova turned all her popularity towards this project: whether it was participation in the" Ice Age" ( the actress paired with Roman Kostomarov took first place) , the honor of carrying the flag at the Sochi Olympics or the comic Ice Bucket Challenge, calling on Russian celebrities to transfer funds to the fund. Few people know how great Madonna' s desire to be useful is. The singer decided that she could improve the lives of children in African countries. Madonna' s initiative was the creation of the organization Rising Malawi( " Revival of Malawi" ) , which fights poverty in this small African state. The funds received by the organization' s fund go to help orphans and HIV- infected children. In addition, the star wanted to build an academy for girls in Malawi with her own money — she was concerned that only 33% of girls in the country receive secondary education. The actress, who was born in South Africa, also considers it necessary to help African children. She is at the head of the Africa Outreach Project charity Foundation, which provides local medical centers with medicines and helps young people get an education. Theron became a participant in the program for the construction of football fields outside the cities of South Africa. In addition, Theron is an active member of the organization PETA( " People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" ) . The actress gladly agrees to take part in the organization' s promotions and photo shoots to remind people of a simple truth: fur looks best on its rightful owners — animals. In her interviews, the actress has repeatedly stressed that she sees no point in the suffering of living beings for the sake of whim and fashion. " It was not a business project, but a spiritual impulse- we just couldn' t not do it, " actress Ksenia Alferova said in an interview with Hello! about the decision together with her husband to found the charity foundation" I am! " in 2012. The purpose of the foundation is to help children with disabilities: with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autistic people. The acting couple is engaged not only in medical care for the wards of their foundation, but also in the creative realization of children, their socialization and even employment: children with Down syndrome and wheelchair users work as waiters and cashiers in the cafe" Coffeemania" under the patronage of Alferova. The American TV presenter Oprah Winfrey is also famous for her good deeds, who in 2011 also received a special Oscar award for her charity work. Her fortune is approximately$ 2. 7 billion, so the amount spent on helping others( $ 50 million) for Oprah is not that significant. With this money, Oprah decided to support the development of education and healthcare. Winfrey herself often takes part in charity events. For example, Oprah visited the island of Haiti after the earthquake and tried to provide all possible assistance to the victims. On December 1, 2008, actor Konstantin Khabensky lost his wife, who became a victim of cancer: Anastasia died of a brain tumor. In the same year, shortly before the death of the woman, the Konstantin Khabensky Charitable Foundation was founded, which was engaged in helping children with oncological and other serious brain diseases. The foundation marked the first five—year period of its work with the figure 130- so many children' s lives were saved by 2013. Then the actor in an interview with the publication" Moscow News" told about his personal feeling of doing charity work: " I just remember those eyes. Not the eyes of a child, because he is not afraid of death yet — he has not made anything yet to be afraid of losing it. I remember the eyes of mothers, especially when there was a complete transition from negative to positive. At such moments, something settles in you and your colleagues. Something so important appears that it stays with you forever. " The musician has always been convinced that it is in his power to help others. Back in 1992, he became the founder of the AIDS foundation and continues to develop it today. Elton directs all funds from the sales of his compositions in the UK and the USA to the organization of research on the problem of AIDS. Since then, he has organized charity concerts more than once( including in Moscow) , as well as parties under the name of his foundation — in order to collect additional amounts. Gosha Kutsenko' s Step Together Foundation helps children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The artist founded the foundation in August 2011 and since then twice a year arranges charity concerts for his wards and auctions, where he invites star friends. Step Together is engaged in legal assistance, advises families where children with a diagnosis grow up, buys medical equipment and medicines and provides targeted assistance. Maria Mironova, Igor Vernik and Evgeny Mironov Five years ago, the actors established the Artist Foundation, which helps elderly actors. The wards of the foundation are veterans of the stage, who devoted their lives to cinema and theater, but were left without support and care. The Foundation is engaged not only in material and medical assistance, but also provides moral support to the elderly: the foundation' s volunteers go to visit their wards, sign and send greeting cards, arrange concerts for artists who no longer play on stage, but can play for each other. The charity work of the supermodel is known throughout Europe — her Naked Hearts foundation has made more than one hundred children from the Russian hinterland smile. And the impulse to create the fund was, according to Vodianova herself, a terrible tragedy: " For me, the events in Beslan in 2004 were a great shock. I realized that I wouldn' t be able to sleep peacefully if I didn' t do something. This is how the Naked Hearts Foundation was created. We started with the construction of playgrounds. I am familiar with the situation when children have nothing to do in the yard. In Nizhny Novgorod, for example, there were two benches where the older guys drank beer, and a sandbox where the kids played. I know that even now the problem of playgrounds is relevant in many cities. We try to solve it as much as we can, " Natalia told her story in an interview with Cosmopolitan. In order to raise funds for her foundation, Vodianova arranges charity balls with the involvement of socialites and celebrities, personally participates in forums, discussions and charity races. In September 2012, actor Leonardo DiCaprio was the UN Peace Ambassador. As part of his position, Leo is engaged in promoting the global efforts of mankind to preserve the climate on the planet. Experts believe that due to the negative human impact, the climate is significantly changing, and global warming has long become a reality, which threatens natural disasters and cataclysms. DiCaprio' s choice for this position is not accidental: Leonardo is considered the main adept of the" green" lifestyle among celebrities. The actor takes an active part in actions to protect animal rights. In 2010, at the Tiger Forum, the actor stood up for tigers, and a year later Leo became the leader of the international IFAW campaign in defense of elephants. In addition, in 1998 Leo founded the Wildlife Conservation Foundation and building harmonious relations between people, animals and plants of the Earth. Leo does not spare not only time and effort for his life' s work, but also regularly makes donations in especially large amounts. For example, a couple of weeks ago, a 40- year- old philanthropist sent$ 15 million to organizations that protect wildlife in Africa and the Amazon rainforest.
