Equipment: audio of “Earth Song” by Michael, pictures of natural disasters, cards with tasks, sheets of paper, felt pens, quotation on the topic. PROCEDURE INTRODUCTION Greeting Warm up Look at the blackboard, please! What is the theme of our lesson? Why do you think so? Really our t heme today is “Nature and Natural disasters ”. How do you think what we shall speak about? Think over our epigraph: “ The landscape belongs to the person who looks after it. ” R. W. Emerson Do you agree with it? Why? ( If we care about our Earth and nature it will not be any natural disasters) Aims During the lesson you’ll: discuss some questions on the topic; get some new information; work in groups; do some tasks; listen to the song. Motivation After the lesson you’ll be able to speak about different natural disasters know some new words by the topic understand how it is important to live in harmony with nature; MAIN PART Vocabulary Let’s see what words we shall use during the lesson. Natural disaster[ ] – terrible accident concerned with nature Drought[ ] – a long period of dry weather so that there isn’t enough water Typhoon[ ] - is a tropical cyclone, wind that moves in circles round a calm area Tsunami[ ] - is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, typically an ocean or a large lake. Flood[ ] – a great overflow of water in a place that is usually dry Earthquake[ ] – a sudden, violent shaking of the earth’s surface Tornado[ ] - i s a violent, dangerous column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and cloud s Famine[ ] – a serious situation in when there is very little food Volcano eruption[ ] – the situation when steam or lava escapes from a volcano Forest fire[ ] – is a great fire in the forest Avalanche[ ] – a large amount of snow, rocks or soil that falls down a mountain T: 1. Now, let’s pronounce these words one more time and then I’ll give you these words and their definitions. You have to match them. ( HO1) Now read the article again and choose the best answer( HO2) Listening Unfortunately, we can’t stop all natural disasters on the global level. Many people in the world try to do as much as possible to save our planet. One of such persons was world famous American pop- singer Michael Jackson. Listen to “Earth S ong ” devoted to the global environmental problems and nature written by him. I’ll give you worksheets with lyrics of this song. But there are gaps in them. While listening you have to write down missed words. Try to understand what this song is about. ( Pupils listen to the first part of the song, fill in the gaps.
